Then, take each object and create a very basic primitive proxy object. Do this as a separate object. Make it as detailed as you think you will need to just cover the basic 3D outline form. But keep it as simple as possible.

Make sure that it is light and render worthy. Don't create a sloppy object that has non-planar polys. You want to do lighting tests on this proxy to get the general idea and you want to be able to render this object to see the result.

When you are done creating all of the proxi objects – preferabply in a separate layer and with names that group them together on the outliner – you can now pan around the scene, make lighting and camera changes etc. And you can do a basic render to check the light position and coverage.

Then set up your scene like so:

Make all of the proxi objects (you could join them as one object if you want) not renderable but visible. Make all of the hi res objects not visible but renderable.

How this works afterwards is that you must leave the device in the USB slot and windows will automatically use it instead of spare space on the hard drive.
